Health Authorities in Ghana have reported two cases of Marburg virus in the Ashanti region; the second most populated region in the country. According to the statement signed by the director general of the Ghana Health Services (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the two separate cases who had contact with 34 persons showed signs of Acute Hemorrhagic Fever thereby prompting health authorities to conduct further investigations.
So far, the preliminary investigations conducted at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research have confirmed both cases to be caused by the infectious viral agent. Confirmatory testing according to the statement will be conducted in Senegal at the institute Pasteur De Dakar where the samples were submitted with the support of the World Health Organization.
