The decision was communicated in a press release issued by the Ghanaian Foreign Affairs Ministry in Accra on 3rd January, 2023, in view of the alarming COVID 19 situation in China. The statement cautioned Ghanaians to, except for essential trips, avoid travelling to China until further notice.

Commenting on the statement, Dr Titus Beyuo, the General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association edged the Ghanaian travelling public to adhere to this caution, describing it as very commendable. In response to a question from the show host, Blessed Soga, of The Pulse program on JoyNews TV channel on 4th January, 2023, Dr Beyuo said “I am very confident of the measure. I think for now per the science available, these are the most appropriate measures that can be instituted. We couldn’t have gone for anything more or less.

By this decision, Ghana joins a host of countries including the United States of America, the United Kingdom, France, India, Australia, Canada, Japan and many more to have imposed various levels of travel restrictions on people travelling from or transiting through China. There has been reports about possible under reporting of covid-19 cases and a likely emergence of a critical variant in China.
