First two cases of Marburg virus confirmed in Ghana

Two cases of Marburg virus has been confirmed in the southern part of the Ashanti Region of Ghana, making it the first two cases of the virus in the Country. Two weeks ago health authorities in Ghana warned the public about two probable cases of the virus following preliminary investigations carried out at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.

The two samples which were confirmed positive for the virulent virus by the Institute Pasteur De Dakar were obtained from two residents of the Ashanti Region after showing the classical symptoms of the Marburg virus. This makes Ghana the second West African Country to have recorded the fatal hemorrhagic viral disease.

The two people who were unrelated have since died. Health authorities with the support of the World Health Organization, have implemented active surveillance to contain the virus. So far no new cases have been reported.
